UN Women supports Economics Olympiad
Date:
One of the significant aspects of empowering girls economically is the exchange of knowledge and the promotion of relevant skills. The Economics Olympiad, held by the Georgian Economic Literacy Initiative (GELi) with the support of UN Women, recently served this goal.
High school students from all regions of the country took part in the Economics Olympiad. It combined school and national rounds, a summer camp on economics and an international final round. This year, up to 1,400 students from 200 schools took part in the initiative, and 230 participants, including 112 girls, took to the national stage.
In addition to the competition, the national round included educational activities, fun games, an awards ceremony and the opportunity to make valuable connections. As for this year’s summer camp, it was held in August at the Bazaleti Training Center of the Free University. It was attended by 25 winners of the national rounds of the Economics Olympiad from Georgia, Azerbaijan and Ukraine. Among the participants were 11 girls.
During the week-long camp, high school students prepared for the international final round and attended intensive lectures on economics and finance. It should be noted that at the invitation of UN Women, they met with the lead economist and head of the Macroeconomic Policy Department at the ISET Policy Institute, Davit Keshelava, who spoke about the role of the gender aspect in the economy: feminist economics and its main concepts.
One of the participants of the Olympiad, Alexandra Tsulaya, said: “I wanted to deepen my knowledge in economics and finance and, at the same time, find out whether I could choose this field as my future profession. That’s why I decided to participate in the Olympiad, and I’m glad that I achieved both goals. The experience I received not only strengthened my interest in economics but also gave me additional motivation to continue my studies in the same direction.”
The Economics Olympiad is held with the general support of the Economic Fundamentals Initiative (EFI), which is implemented by the Georgian Economic Literacy Initiative (GELi). The partnership between the Economics Olympiad and UN Women has become part of the UN Women Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia project “Strengthening the Resilience of Ukrainian Refugee Women and Girls in Host Countries”, which is funded by the Japanese Government.
