In addition to supporting the parliamentary oversight mechanisms on Women, Peace and Security issues, UN Women also advocates for the needs of the IDP and conflict affected women residing in the villages adjacent to the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL).

Within the framework of this support, Teona Akubardia, Member of Parliament and Thematic Rapporteur, delivered the Thematic Report on the Implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda to the standing Gender Equality Council of the Parliament of Georgia. In attendance were the Members of Parliament, officials of the executive branch, the diplomatic corps, international organizations and the members of civil society.

During her speech, Ms. Akubardia addressed the challenges faced by IDP and conflict affected women residing in the villages adjacent to the ABL. Furthermore, her attention was directed towards the recommendations outlined in the report. Among them are the following: promoting an increase in women’s representation at the decision-making level in the defence and security sectors and in the Geneva International Discussions (GID); as well as implementing the strategies to enhance women’s effective engagement in the Incident Prevention and Response Mechanism (IPRM); educating displaced and conflict-affected women about the crisis and emergency preparedness; and developing the policies to prevent conflict-related sexual violence.

“We should have the capacity to oversee the implementation of the recommendations indicated in the parliamentary report in addition to improving [women’s living] conditions.” While working on the report, we especially focused on the women who live near the dividing line.” Ms. Akubardia stated.

It is important to point out that Ms. Akubardia conducted interviews with the IDP and conflict affected women prior to beginning the preparation of the report. With the assistance of UN Women and its local partner CSOs, during the meetings, women discussed the challenges and difficulties they encounter on a daily basis.

The given report will be submitted to the Gender Equality Council of Parliament and other relevant committees for further consideration and to determine effective solutions to the issues in question.

The activities supporting the parliamentary oversight, including the preparation of the report, are carried out within the framework of the UN Women project: “Accelerating Implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in Georgia”, which is supported by the Conflict, Stability and Security Fund of the UK Government.
