UN Women continues to strengthen civil society
Date:
UN Women Georgia continues to advance initiatives that support civil society organizations working on gender equality and women’s rights in Georgia. In this spirit, throughout 2025 and in partnership with the Women’s Information Center, consultation meetings were planned and conducted with the aim of assessing the needs and building the capacities of regional NGOs, media organizations and activists.
The initiative covered the regions of Kakheti, Kvemo Kartli, Shida Kartli, Imereti, Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, Guria and Samtskhe-Javakheti. During the meetings, around 50 participants discussed gender equality and the status of women’s rights at the municipal level and identified local needs, challenges and opportunities.
“Such initiatives are grounded in real needs and leave you with a feeling of gratitude towards all those people and organizations who, in difficult times, took the time to listen to women—believing that if anyone has truly done something good in this country, first and foremost, it is the women living in the regions. Meetings like these give us strength,” said Mariko Tsikoridze, one of the participants from the Kvemo Kartli region who is a project coordinator at CENN and the founder of Women’s Community Radio WW.
It is noteworthy that the UN Women initiative also aimed to introduce civil society representatives to emerging and widely used communication formats that can help them more effectively convey key messages to the public.
“I met interesting and strong women whose stories were truly inspiring,” said illustrator Tako Siradze, who plans to apply the knowledge she gained on women’s rights and gender equality to her own work. “Greater participation by content creators can play an important role in advancing women’s rights and achieving gender equality. Illustrations, videos and written stories amplify invisible voices and communicate complex issues in a way that is emotional and accessible to wider audiences. Sometimes, one well‑told story can reach thousands of people and strengthen a sense of solidarity.”
The meetings with civil society representatives were held as part of the UN Women project “Good Governance for Gender Equality in Georgia”, generously funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad), as well as within the framework of the project “Women’s Increased Leadership for Democracy in Georgia” (WILD), implemented with the generous support of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
