Civil society representatives learn to use artificial intelligence
Date:
Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the key global trends in innovative technologies. The demand for knowledge of its diverse capabilities and applications across different fields is steadily increasing. At the same time, discussions are expanding regarding the challenges that this innovation presents, such as those related to information security and ethics.
For civil society, understanding the multifaceted functionality of AI and addressing its associated challenges are of particular importance - especially when resources are limited. UN Women supports its partner NGOs in strengthening their knowledge and skills, including in the field of technology. In cooperation with Business and Technology University (BTU), a five-day intensive training course was developed and delivered between 30 June and 4 July, attended by 23 representatives of Georgia’s civil sector.
The programme was tailored to the specific needs and professional characteristics of NGOs. Participants learned how to use AI in strategic planning, project writing, digital communications and innovative services. In addition to practical exercises and a final project, they also tested the use of AI in their daily workflows.
As noted by programme participant Nino Tsikhelashvili, a member of the Georgian Women's National League, public organizations operate in both physical and digital spaces, making it essential for them to understand how to optimize management systems and evaluate the advantages and risks of modern technologies.
“AI studies in Georgia are at an early stage,” she said upon completing the course, “and initiatives like this contribute to the overall development of the field. The course was made dynamic by the participation of representatives from public organizations and their diverse perspectives on AI applications. A team of instructors with various specialties helped us understand the link between AI knowledge and the degree to which it can be integrated into both personal and organizational work.”
This initiative will support NGOs working on women’s rights and gender equality in deepening their digital competencies and enhancing technological engagement, while safely and ethically leveraging the opportunities that innovation offers. UN Women will continue to strengthen civil society’s technological capacity and offer relevant training courses in the future.
The training programme was implemented as part of the UN Women project “Good Governance for Gender Equality in Georgia”, funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (Norad).
