The main characters of the documentary all live in different parts of the country, however they are united by a common problem. All of them have fallen victim to violence within their own families. It is impossible to watch the stories, depicted by director Zurab Inashvili, without becoming emotional.Rusudan Nikolaishvili, a student of the Georgian Institute of Public Affairs (GIPA), wrote an essay as a result of the screening in which she writes: ‘The stories in the movie are extremely heartbreaking and left an unforgettable impression on me. They made me willing to knock on every door and help all women to protect their rights. High rates of femicide (there were 34 women killed in 2014) and domestic violence in Georgia in recent years, have unveiled the cruel truth about this severe problem and the necessity to fight more vigorously. We should not let any woman suffer! Everybody should speak out and unite for their protection’. Another student, Salome Bendianishvili, wrote in her own essay:‘This documentary thrilled me. I never thought that men and women enjoyed different rights and were not equal, but the movie “Speak Out!” made me more courageous and I started to think that I am a woman myself, and if I happen to be in a similar situation, I must speak out and fight for my rights’.
The documentary “Speak Out!” was produced with the support of UN Women as part of the UN Joint Programme to Enhance Gender Equality in Georgia (funded by the Government of Sweden), in cooperation with the Georgian National Film Center (GNFC). The movie was first shown on March 2015,to commemorate International Women’s Day.
