Within the framework of cooperation between UN Women and the international company Schwarzkopf, women residing in various regions of Georgia attended an intensive certification course to learn how to become a hair stylist. The training will significantly boost their future employment and economic empowerment.

UN Women identified the participants of the training programme through its partners - the Taso Foundation, the Georgian Association of Facilitating Women's Employment “Amagdari”, and the State Fund for Protection and Assistance of (Statutory) Victims of Human Trafficking. In total, 18 women were selected through the interview process. All of them wanted to become a hair stylist but were not able to pursue their desired career due to their lack of relevant education. It is noteworthy that the Taso Foundation fully financed the travel and accommodation in Tbilisi for eight women who could not afford the training.

“Before attending the Schwarzkopf programme, my basic occupation was being a housewife,” remarked one of the participants, aged 19. “I have never worked because I have a three-year-old daughter and I am a single mother. I never had an opportunity to finance my studies or to start a job. I want to continue working as a hair stylist very much, and to do it well.”

The selected beneficiaries attended an intensive theoretical and practical course - a total of 30 classes - over two months. They learned all of the activities related to hair care, from cutting and coloring to styling. The participants received certificates after the final exam on 16 August 2018, and the Schwarzkopf company awarded the top six trainees with professional tools.

“I have always liked the idea of being a hair stylist,” said a 28-year-old trainee. “That is why I decided to attend this course, and I am definitely going to work in this field. I have big plans. Most likely, I will work at a beauty parlour, but I hope to open one of my own in the future.”

The initiative was one of the activities of the project “Joint Action for Women’s Economic Empowerment”, implemented by UN Women with the financial support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway.
